After re-signing Chris Paul and still hoping to get a contract done with Clint Capela, the Houston Rockets don’t have a ton of money to round out the rest of their roster. They did find another solid player to come off the bench, signing Michael Carter-Williams, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The deal is for the veteran’s minimum, and if he can just be a decent player off the bench, he will turn out to be well worth the money. Carter-Williams was taken with the 11th pick in the 2013 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and was impressive in his rookie year. He played in 70 games averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 assists, and 6.2 rebounds per game.
Since his rookie season, he has constantly gone downhill while dealing with injuries and inconsistent minutes. Last year with the Charlotte Hornets he played in 52 games averaging 4.6 points and shooting only 33.2 percent from the field. From deep he shot even worse hitting only 23.7 percent from behind the three-point line.
The Rockets are a team that loves to shoot the ball from deep, and it’s pretty clear that isn’t something Carter-Williams is comfortable doing, which makes this a bit of an odd signing. They must see something else in Carter-Williams game that they think will fit well on their squad.
They also need Carter-Williams to stay healthy for the entire campaign this year. If he isn’t able to suit up for the Rockets, he isn’t going to do them any good and is going to make the bench shorthanded.
