Mavs’ Luka Doncic reacts to ‘MVP’ chants in Houston
Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic was showered with shouts of “MVP” in Houston after pouring in 41 points (one shy of his career-high) along with six rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals — handing the Rockets a 137-128 defeat, their third straight.
Doncic has quickly put his name among those deserving consideration for the Most Valuable Player award, but that was a chant he didn’t expect to hear in Rockets Country.
“It was nice,” said Doncic, who eclipsed the 40-point mark for the second time in four games, according to Dwain Price of Mavs.com. “When I hear those sounds it was very nice.
“I never imagined being called like that in the NBA. It’s something that’s special.”
The 20-year-old has been the surprise of the season, taking what was Rookie of the Year talent to game-changing star-level talent after only one offseason. The Slovenian wonderkid is only a few dimes away from averaging a triple-double on the season, holding averages of 30.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 9.8 assists through 16 games this season.
To hear chants of MVP is already something meaningful in the midst of a home crowd. Hearing it on the road validates that claim on a whole other level.
Doncic has been nothing short of fantastic in his second season, posting much gaudier stat lines by playing less than two additional minutes per game compared to his rookie season. His numbers haven’t been all for naught, sparking the Mavericks to an 11-5 record — something most around the league didn’t expect this soon.
