Marcus Camby thinks Carmelo Anthony still has 2 more years left, was victim of ‘bad rap’

In light of the Houston Rockets’ decision to part ways with Carmelo Anthony, former teammate Marcus Camby is still hopeful Melo can bounce back from a nasty decline at the tail end of his career.

Camby, who played alongside Anthony as a member of the Denver Nuggets, noted Anthony was put in a bad spot, hoping to mold his game in hopes to fit with a much different offensive style.

“He has a couple great years left,” said Camby on ESPN’s “The Jump,” according to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. “I personally feel he got a bad rap on things. Coming here to Houston was a tough offense to play in when you’re not a spot-up 3-point shooter. I hope he continues to play.”

Former teammate and longtime veteran Nene noted the same as most of his teammates — it was a poor fit. Yet the big man expressed hopefulness for Melo if he can admit to going through a new phase in his career.

“Melo has always been a great player, legendary, a Hall of Famer,” said Nene. “But it’s like having a beautiful picture that is supposed to be a puzzle. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the picture is if the puzzle doesn’t fit. Melo is still a great player. He just didn’t fit here. It’s hard.

“He can still play in this league. I can only speak for myself and what happened with me. It’s all the same. When you’ve been in the league, you have to understand that time goes. Things change and you got to change yourself. A lot of older players like Vince Carter change themselves and accept new [styles]. I accepted a new [style], too.”

Carmelo Anthony is still considering his options as his representatives work out a potential landing spot while he remains in limbo. Retiring is among the options, though his inner circle will likely fight to give him another opportunity with another team, as the Portland Trail Blazers and the New Orleans Pelicans have reportedly expressed interest.
