Luka Doncic explains why Mavericks tends to blow late leads

Mavs, Luka Doncic

Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic has tried to shed some light on the Mavs’ tendency to give up considerable leads late in ballgames. Case in point was their overtime defeat to the Houston Rockets on Friday, during which Dallas was outscored by their opponents 31-20 in the fourth period.

According to Doncic, it all boils down to his team’s inexperience.

“We’re a young team. We’ve got a lot to learn,” he said, via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “We’ll get better for sure. I know we’re going to get together when it matters most in the playoffs, so I’m not worried about that.”

Doncic isn’t wrong here. After all, the Mavs are currently being spearheaded by a 21-year-old phenom, who is playing in just his second season in the NBA. Surely, there will be a few bumps along the way.

Doncic actually did pretty well against the Rockets on Friday, logging a 28-point, 13-rebound, and 10-assist triple-double for his side. He did go 11-of-27 from the field and 1-of-9 from distance, though, while also turning the ball over eight times. Doncic is human after all, and some rust was to be expected following a four-month hiatus.

This loss put the Mavs two and a half games behind the Rockets, who themselves are currently sitting at the sixth spot in the West. Dallas still has seven seeding games to go, however, and they still have several opportunities to improve their final standing for the playoffs. Right now, only six games separate them from the second-seeded Los Angeles Clippers, so needless to say, a lot can still happen between now and by the time the regular season ends.
