The Houston Rockets are widely expected to part ways with Carmelo Anthony soon after his 10-game test run failed miserably, and if/when he enters the open market, NBA executives believe Pat Riley and the Miami Heat could come calling, according to Sean Deveney of Sporting News.
League executives contacted by Sporting News speculated that Miami, which has been looking to add scoring punch off the bench, would be the most likely landing spot for Anthony. The Heat and Anthony’s representatives met to discuss the 10-time All-Star forward possibly joining the team before he signed with Houston last summer. Anthony, notably, also is a close friend of team mainstay Dwyane Wade.
Carmelo Anthony and the Heat met at summer league over the offseason when it was confirmed that the Oklahoma City Thunder were going to move on from Melo. The Thunder traded Anthony to the Atlanta Hawks, who then waived the veteran scorer.
Anthony met with the Heat and Rockets and he ultimately signed with Houston. But now that the experiment with the Rockets looks to be reaching its end, could Melo land in South Beach with Dwyane Wade? Only time will tell, but some front office folks think it’s a possibility.
Carmelo Anthony has been a negative to the Rockets when he’s been on the floor. Houston has a net rating of minus-9.0 with Anthony on the court and minus-0.2 with him on the bench, per NBA.com. Anthony is averaging 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game on the season while shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from beyond the arc in the 10 games he’s played in.
The Heat could probably get Anthony into better shape since they have a history of having a rigorous training program.
