Knicks news: Russell Westbrook trade to New York only happens on one condition

Russell Westbrook, Rockets, Knicks

If the Houston Rockets are willing to trade Russell Westbrook at a discount price, the New York Knicks are all-in on acquiring the former MVP, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Westbrook is still one of the best players in the NBA. However, he’s owed $130 million over the next three years and his play is declining due to his age and all the injuries he’s suffered.

It looks like Knicks president Leon Rose is hesitant to give up a lot to acquire Westbrook, who has requested a trade from the Rockets.

If Russell Westbrook is on the discount rack, Knicks president Leon Rose is all in, according to NBA sources.

Reports state the explosive point guard wants out. The Knicks feel they have a lot of leverage and aren’t trying to give up any key future pawns, according to sources. Their potential interest could stem from using it as a scare tactic with OKC in any Paul talks.

During the 2019-20 season, Westbrook averaged 27.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists. The triple-double machine is said to be looking to play somewhere where he can be the primary ball-handler like he was on the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Knicks haven’t had a star point guard since Derrick Rose played on the team for one season back in 2016-17. New York head coach Tom Thibodeau would love to coach Westbrook since Russ is as fierce of a competitor there is in the NBA.

However, the Knicks have to be careful here. Giving up multiple players and draft picks for Westbrook may upset the fanbase and it’s not a guarantee Westbrook would make New York a better team since he’s not a good jump shooter and plays very erratic.
