Klay Thompson says Warriors lacked ‘killer instinct’ in 2nd half vs. Rockets

Klay Thompson, Warriors, Rockets

Klay Thompson expressed disappointment after squandering a 20-point lead to the Houston Rockets, who managed to take the game to overtime and win it in spectacular fashion with a James Harden 3-pointer that left only one second in the clock.

The Golden State Warriors sharpshooter said his team failed to deal the finishing blow and lacked the “killer instinct” that makes teams so dangerous when up big and early.

“I do feel we did [let it get away],” said Thompson. “I don’t think we played with that killer instinct in that second half. I think we relaxed being up.”

According to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN, Thursday’s 135-134 overtime loss marked the Warriors’ largest blown halftime lead (17 points) since Jan. 20, 2007.

Yet relaxing after big leads has become a character trait for the Warriors, who were against a very real threat in an engaged Harden, who is currently playing the best basketball of his career.

The Warriors have gone 14-12 since starting the season 11-2, but Klay Thompson hasn’t panicked, noting Golden State will find a way to navigate this season moving forward:

“I’m not sure, but we’ll stay the course and get back to doing what we do,” he said. “It’s a different year than it has [been] in the past. Although we are not blowing teams out, we are still 11 games above .500 with a chance to go on a run here before All-Star break. It’s not the end of the world.”

Golden State dropped to third place after this recent loss to the Rockets, now trailing the Oklahoma City Thunder and the West-leading Denver Nuggets.
