Joe Johnson focused on getting timing down rather than fitting in with Rockets

Newly-added forward Joe Johnson isn’t focusing his energy on fitting in with his new teammates, but rather trying to get himself right before doing so.

After playing very limited minutes with the Utah Jazz and missing several games with an injury, the new Rocket will pick and choose his spots, as he gets reacclimated to Mike D’Antoni’s fast-paced system.

“Honestly, it’s just getting timing down for me,” Johnson said, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. “Just from my IQ for the game – getting down the plays is one thing I have to do – but just getting out there, playing, that’s going to come.

“At the end of the day, it’s just basketball. It’s fun. It’s a great deal for me to be back for coach Mike D’Antoni. We had a great run in Phoenix and looking to continue it here.”

Johnson has played in only 33 games this season, logging only three starts with the Jazz. This lack of playing time has put his game in a funk, shooting only 42 percent from the floor and 27 percent from deep — numbers that will need to improve if he hopes to see the floor often under D’Antoni.

“It’s a mini training camp, kind of, where you touch everything you’ve done all year and make sure you’re all on the same page and everybody knows what we want,” D’Antoni said of Johnson.

The Rockets have surpassed the Golden State Warriors for the No. 1 seed and look to keep the streak going after winning 10 in a row before the All-Star break.
