James Nunnally excited to join Rockets on 10-day deal after roller-coaster last 24 hours

James Nunnally, Rockets

Houston Rockets forward James Nunnally has had a hectic past 24 hours as he agreed to join the team he once thought would take him as an undrafted free agent. The UC Santa Barbara product was initially waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves right as they made a coaching change, firing president/head coach Tom Thibodeau and replacing him with assistant Ryan Saunders.

The 6-foot-7 forward then had a decision on his hands between a few European clubs due, but turned it down after the Rockets offered him a 10-day opportunity to remain with the team.

“I thought I would sign with them after meeting them on July 1st in L.A. It didn’t happen,” said Nunnally, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic. “Now over six months later, I was going to make a decision today to go to a great Euroleague situation and the Rockets called last night. Crazy 24 hours! I am very excited.”

As Iko pointed out in an earlier article, the Rockets had their eye on Nunnally from early in free agency, making him a potential candidate to take Danuel House Jr.’s spot in case both sides couldn’t agree to a deal.

House was sent to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the G League for the remainder of the season after his 45 days of NBA service were up, making room for Nunnally to virtually try out through the next few games.

The Rockets could sign Nunnally to a minimum contract for the rest of the season or sign him to another 10-day deal if they decide to want to see more of him before making a decision.

The 28-year-old played 13 games with the Wolves this season, posting 2.1 points in 4.9 minutes per game with the franchise.
