The Houston Rockets have been one of the teams in the West loading up to contend against the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors, adding Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony during the past two seasons in hopes to knock them off the block.
While the Oklahoma City Thunder tried a similar equation by pairing Russell Westbrook and Paul George with Anthony last season, James Harden claims it will only work if a team finds a way to make it work.
The West has been very aggressive pursuing top talent over the years, but never so hastily desperate to lock down All-Star-caliber players as they have been for the past two years.
“A lot of people need to understand this: players want to win,” Rockets guard Eric Gordon told Tim Bontemps of The Washington Post. “They want to go to winning situations. When you have a winning culture, things become so much easier. It’s good to see all these superteams, because [it means] guys are willing to win.”
Harden concluded though, that once those stars are in place, it’s up to them to bring their talent to fruition.
“You’ve got to figure it out. You’ve got to compete,” said James Harden. “You’ve got to get your a** in that gym and try to get to that level that the top is at. If you don’t, you’re never going to get there.”
The Rockets have been very confident that adding Anthony will work differently for them than it has for the Thunder, but only time will tell if that confidence is only hopefulness or predictive greatness yet to unfold.
