Carmelo Anthony’s future in the NBA is still in limbo. Technically, the 10-time All-Star is an Atlanta Hawks player after he was officially traded there by the Oklahoma City Thunder this week, but it’s also widely expected that Anthony’s remaining salary of $27.9 million for the 2018-19 season will be bought out by the Hawks, which in turn would make the forward an unrestricted free agent.
Once Anthony hits the free agent market, the Houston Rockets are among the leading candidates to sign the veteran.
Speaking to reporters during Thursday’s Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas, Rockets guard and reigning NBA MVP James Harden expressed his belief that his team is capable of capitalizing on Anthony’s remaining potential to chip in for their common goal of winning an NBA title, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.
There’s a lot of talent. Someone has to sacrifice to get where we want to go. Everybody in the world knows what Carmelo brings, how gifted and talented he is. He has still has a lot more to go. If he comes come to the Rockets, we’ll get the best out of him.”
James Harden is also aware that adding somebody like Carmelo Anthony to the Rockets would cause a significant change to the team’s chemistry. With Harden, Anthony, and Chris Paul on the same team, the Rockers will have a trio of ball-dominant alpha males that needed their egos to be massaged. At the end of the day, it comes down to communication, according to Harden, per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.
“We all know how easy he can score the basketball. We have had conversations with him. That’s the most important thing … bringing in Melo … to be part of a championship team, you have to have conversations. As long as you communicate good things can happen.”
