Houston waives R.J. Hunter, signs Bruno Caboclo

Chris Paul, James Harden, Carmelo Anthony

The Houston Rockets is looking to shore up its frontcourt. The team has signed 6-foot-9 small forward Bruno Caboclo, waiving sharpshooter R.J. Hunter in the process.

Shams Charania reported the development on his Twitter account.

With swingmen Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute leaving this offseason, the Rockets have been reportedly searching the market for another perimeter defender.

It is obvious that Hunter does not fit into the Rockets’ needs this season as the 6-foot-5 shooting guard is an imitation of the team’s sixth man, Eric Gordon. It could be assumed that Hunter will find it difficult to play some minutes behind James Harden and Gordon.

On the other hand, Caboclo’s potential to be a quality 3-and-D player gives the Rockets a reason to believe that he is a piece of the puzzle. However, the young Brazilian forward is yet to make some strides in the league.

Fellow Brazilian player, Tiago Splitter, voiced out some positive remarks for the Caboclo as per Sacramento Bee’s Aileene Voisin.

“Bruno is a great player. He needs a team that gives him confidence, that lets him play and has some good leaders. He’s a good shooter, has long arms, and has a feel for the game. He’s an NBA player for sure. I wish him the best.”

Caboclo is still finding that ‘right team’ to play for. Last season, he was traded to the Sacramento Kings for Malachi Richardson, ending Caboclo’s forgettable three-year stint with the Toronto Raptors.

He was drafted 20th pick overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. It could have been a day that the Raptors want to forget as they drafted him ahead of quality players like Rodney Hood, Clint Capela, and Nikola Jokic.
