Houston cuts Bruno Caboclo, 3 other players

Bruno Caboclo

With the regular season waiting just around the corner, the Houston Rockets have trimmed their roster to 16 players. The team has waived Bruno Caboclo, along with three other guards.

The official Twitter account of the Rockets posted this development.

Among the four players that the Rockets released, the 6-foot-9 Caboclo is the most intriguing. The 23-year old small forward was the Toronto Raptors’ 20th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. But the Brazilian young stud never lived up to his billing as he bounced back and forth the G League and the NBA.

The Rockets picked up Caboclo in hopes that he could be a defensive anchor in the team’s second unit. Combo forwards Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute left the team early in this summer’s free agency, leaving a gaping hole on the Rockets’ defensive schemes.

But the Rockets would not leave any plates unturned as they also picked up free agent James Ennis and acquired Marquese Chriss in a trade with the Phoenix Suns. During the preseason, head coach Mike D’Antoni has put Ennis on the starting lineup at times, while the 6-foot-10 Chriss has manned the post for the second unit.

In all understanding, the presence of Ennis and Chriss made Caboclo expendable. It is obvious that Caboclo is the least inexperienced among the three, and arguably the least skilled, too.

With the acquisition of Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul, along with the steady improvement of center Clint Capela, this could be the best supporting cast that superstar James Harden has had while donning the team’s jersey.
