Heat expect Carmelo Anthony to sign with the Rockets
With Kawhi Leonard saga now over, much of the NBA offseason drama will now be supplied by the ongoing situation of another superstar in the form of Carmelo Anthony. Anthony was recently flipped by the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Atlanta Hawks together with a future protected draft pick for Dennis Schroder and Mike Muscala in a clear attempt by both teams to alleviate each other’s financial status.
For Atlanta, it is expected to part ways with Anthony, as the Hawks are reportedly going to buy out the 10-time All-Star’s massive $27.9 million salary for the 2018-19 season. This leads to speculation about where exactly Anthony would be headed. There are two teams leading the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes: the Houston Rockets and the Miami Heat.
However, the Heat appeared to have given up on their chase of Anthony. According to Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald, the two sides simply just could not find a middle ground for a potential partnership to push through.
The Heat had some interest in Anthony, 34, and met with him in Las Vegas at Anthony’s request during NBA Summer League action more than a week ago. But the source said the role and the kind of money Anthony was looking for wasn’t a fit with the Heat.
The Heat are currently over the luxury tax line by around $4 million. The team could also just be wary of the impact of adding Anthony to the team on the development of the likes of Josh Richardson and Justise Winslow, who will surely see their minutes take a hit should the team add in the event that Melo takes his talents to South Beach.
