Hawks sending Carmelo Anthony a jersey

Carmelo Anthony, Hawks

Carmelo Anthony is only days away from signing with the Houston Rockets after agreeing to a one-year, $2.4 million deal for the veteran’s minimum, but the Atlanta Hawks are still hoping to celebrate his few days with the team by giving him a commemorative jersey.

While this could be likely seen as a petty move — Melo did give the Hawks a $2.4 million discount on his buyout, only to gain it back by signing with the Rockets, keeping every single penny of his original five-year multi-year deal that he signed originally with the New York Knicks.

Anthony has switched to the No. 7 ever since becoming a Knick and could likely don that same uniform with the Rockets, as Clint Capela could be poised to retain his No. 15 jersey after signing a five-year deal with the team.

Marksman Joe Johnson was the last to wear No. 7 for the team, but the longtime NBA veteran won’t be in the books for next season, allowing Melo to hold onto his usual jersey number.

Nevertheless, this is a pretty awesome gesture by the NBA franchise. It didn’t have to do diddly for a player who never played for the team, and this is just a nice deed.
