The Houston Rockets rallied from 25 points down to defeat the San Antonio Spurs, 109-107. The win marked Houston’s largest come-from-behind victory in franchise history.
After the game, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich admitted he actually expected the huge run at some point:
“Some ways it’s like your worst nightmare to go up 20 quickly because you know the thing is going to turn to some degree,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said, via Kristie Rieken of The Associated Press. “So the way it was an even game down the stretch is pretty much what you’d expect most of the time.”
A 30-plus-year veteran like Pop has seen and experienced them all, so comebacks like this are no longer surprising to him.
More than anything, perhaps the future Hall of Famer was frustrated with their late-game execution, and not their blown lead.
In their previous meeting, San Antonio was the one that turned the tide on Houston. This was also the same game where Houston protested the outcome due to a botched call from the referees on a James Harden dunk.
San Antonio established its biggest lead of the night twice late in the second quarter and held a 19-point cushion at the intermission. However, the Rockets stormed back in the third period and cut the lead down to six heading into the fourth.
The Rockets finally completed their comeback with a little over five minutes remaining off a Danuel House Jr. layup. The game was tied at 104-apiece before P.J. Tucker broke the deadlock with a big corner triple with 2:35 remaining. San Antonio still scored one more bucket to cut the lead to one, but failed to salvage the blown opportunity.
