GM Daryl Morey says Rockets are ‘more focused on the now’

Right now it feels good to be the Houston Rockets. Despite a multitude of obstacles through the season, such as an early appearance in the 14th spot in the Western Conference and what felt like endless injuries to key players on their roster, they are currently seated in the fourth seed with a 39-25 record that has them just a half game behind Oklahoma City and the third seed.

General Manager Daryl Morey isn’t stressing the heat the team has gotten around paying Chris Paul a monster deal last summer. Although some worry that the deal won’t age well, Morey’s focus is on the present and making sure they capitalize on every opportunity they have, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon:

“You need two guys as good as James and Chris to win [a championship], so we’re more focused on the now. In terms of the long term, we studied the guys who were like him in the past, and all of them played very late into their careers. All the top point guards who were Hall of Fame-level guys all were very effective late into their careers.”

Morey’s mantra has long been getting as much talent as he can on the team and making it work out, and it doesn’t seem he has any interest in changing it up. It has worked well for him, as the team has made two conference finals appearances since 2015 and is on pace to win over 50 games for the fifth time since James Harden’s arrival in 2012.

Harden has been the cause of much of their success, especially this season. The Beard has willed the team to win after win through the season by incredible and historic feats. Pairing a player like that with a healthy Chris Paul and Clint Capela is the only way to win a championship. More importantly, though, when you have a guy like Harden, you have to make sure you do everything you can to not waste a single minute of the opportunity he brings to your franchise.

Although they were just a game a way from making their first Final’s appearance in over 20 years last season, they will have to prove they are up for the task yet again in just a little over a month.
