Gary Payton reacts to being surpassed by Rockets’ Chris Paul on assists list

Gary Payton

Chris Paul on Monday surpassed Gary Payton’s benchmark of 8,971 assists total on his career tonight. Payton talked about his record being broke on Yahoo Sports’ “The Bounce.”

“It’s all good man, congratulations. Fella, I like that. Sorry to me… keep going up, man. Go up the hill. All records are meant to be broke. It’s good for him. I’m glad he’s playing the way he is. If he wasn’t as hurt as much, he would be more up here.”

Chris Paul this injury has dealt with a myriad of injuries. Paul has played in only 32 games this season. He’s averaged 32.5 minutes per game along with 15.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 7.9 assists while shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from beyond the arc.

This past game versus the Dallas Mavericks Paul had 17 points and 11 assists on five of 12 shooting. He’s slowly coming back to being fully healthy and prepared for a deep playoff run.

This season for the Rockets has been fairly difficult. They came into the season not retaining either Luca Mbah Moute or Trevor Ariza. Without the defensive depth at the wing, Houston has had trouble stopping teams from scoring 100+ every night on them.

Because of Paul’s lack of health, James Harden has had to carry the team on his back. Through the new year, Harden has proven himself to be an MVP candidate. His ability to score off of isolations and beat nearly anyone off the dribble, while taking contact nearly every time.

The Rockets are now 33-23 on the season and sit in the 5th seed of the NBA’s Western Conference.
