Former Russell Westbrook coach Scott Brooks reacts to Wizards’ John Wall trade with Rockets

John Wall, Scott Brooks, Russell Westbrook, Wizards, Rockets trade

Washington Wizards head coach Scott Brooks, who coached Russell Westbrook on the Oklahoma City Thunder, is excited to reunite with the former MVP in the nation’s capital even if it means he has to say goodbye to John Wall.

The Wizards traded Wall to the Houston Rockets for Westbrook on Wednesday. On behalf of the Washington franchise, Brooks commented on the blockbuster trade.

“Russell’s accomplishments and honors on the court speak for themselves, but his drive and will to win are what separate him as a truly unique player,” said Brooks, via David Aldridge of The Athletic.

“As much as I’m looking forward to reuniting with hi, I’m equally sad to say good-bye to John. He is one of the toughest and most gifted players I’ve ever been around and we all wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Scott Brooks coached Russell Westbrook for seven years on the Thunder. The Wizards are hoping the duo can have success in Washington with All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal in the fold next to them.

The 2017 MVP, Westbrook averaged 27.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game last season for the Rockets. He averaged a triple-double for three years in a row with the Thunder at one point and is a nine-time All-Star.

John Wall, meanwhile, finishes his stellar Wizards career with averages of 19.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 9.2 assists in 573 games. He made five All-Star teams and did a lot of work in the Washington community. Wall is universally recognized as the best point guard in Wizards franchise history.

It’s going to be fascinating to watch Westbrook and Beal play together on the Wizards and James Harden and Wall share the floor in Houston. All four players are ball-dominant guys and there’s only ball at the end of the day.

Brooks and Rockets coach Stephen Silas certainly have their work cut out for them.
