Father of new Rockets coach Stephen Silas speaks on son coaching James Harden, Russell Westbrook

The Houston Rockets recently named Stephen Silas their next head coach, surprising some people in the NBA circles. Despite the doubts surrounding him, Paul Silas—Stephen’s father and former head coach—said his son is more than qualified for the Houston job, per FOX 26’s Mark Berman.

From 1997 to 2003, Paul found himself as an assistant coach and head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. On the other hand, Stephen learned under his father, working as a scout and assistant for the Hornets from 1999 to 2003.

Then, after they spent time together in Charlotte, both Paul and Stephen ended up working together on the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2003 to 2005. After a few years of being separated, Paul and Stephen would reunite on the coaching staff of the Charlotte Bobcats from 2010 to 2012.

Besides working under the tutelage of his father, Stephen spent time with the Golden State Warriors from 2006-2010. Before being named the next head coach of the Rockets, Stephen was an assistant for the Dallas Mavericks from 2018 to 2020.

Seeing that Stephen was able to work alongside his father and one of the best coaches in today’s NBA in Rick Carlisle, Paul believes his son is ready for a promotion. There’s no doubt that Stephen will have lofty expectations given the fact he’ll be coaching the dynamic duo of James Harden and Russell Westbrook on the Rockets.

Of course, Stephen is replacing Mike D’Antoni, who parted ways with the Rockets after four seasons. Even though he couldn’t win an NBA title in Houston, D’Antoni came close to leading the organization to the NBA Finals in multiple seasons.

Following the tenure of D’Antoni, it will be up to Stephen Silas to prove why he was named the franchise’s new head coach and lead the Rockets to better success in the playoffs.
