Doc Rivers talks about Chris Paul and the reaction he expects from Clippers crowd

Monday night is a big one for NBA teams who have games scheduled, especially because they are being played on Martin Luther King Day. For Chris Paul though, it’s extra special as it marks the first time he’ll play inside Staples Center to face his former team, the L.A. Clippers, as a member of the Houston Rockets.

Clippers head coach Doc Rivers was asked if his team will treat the matchup any different from their other regular season games. He said it could be more meaningful to Paul, and added, via a clip posted by ClutchPoints’ Tomer Azarly, that if he had it his way, he wants the home fans to give Paul a huge ovation for the years of service he gave the Clippers franchise.

“I doubt, I think in some ways it is just another game, probably more different than for Chris for us…”

“I think he should get a good reaction. I’m sure there will be a lot of fans that will look at Chris and say ‘You left us’ and that’ll be right, but in my opinion, the fans should say thank you for the years of service…”

The nine-time All-Star spent the past six seasons with the Clippers. However, rumors swirled last year that he could be on the move with the team heading in a different direction. It led to Paul ultimately being traded to the Rockets in the offseason, in exchange for seven players, including Patrick Beverley, Montrezl Harrell and Sam Dekker, as well as a future first-round pick and cash considerations.

Now with the Rockets, Chris Paul has adjusted well to his new team and is proving that he can co-exist on the floor with James Harden and company. They are currently ranked second in the Western Conference and they are geared for a deep playoff run with their backcourt duo leading their charge.
