Despite long silence, Carmelo Anthony is still headed to Houston Rockets

Carmelo Anthony

The marriage between free agent forward Carmelo Anthony and the Houston Rockets are still on schedule. That will just have to wait for a little bit, as the 10-time All-Star is currently in another continent for humanitarian reasons.

Asked by a random Twitter user about the reason why Anthony has yet to ink a contract with the Rockets, Marc Stein of the New York Times assured his followers that the forward is still headed to Houston, the formality of which will come once Anthony returns from a trip to South Africa, where he took part in the “More Than a Game” youth leadership program along with other members of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

Carmelo Anthony is still very much signing with Houston, as league sources have indicated since July 23, but Melo has been part of the @TheNBPA’s traveling party on the #NBAAfrica trip since clearing waivers last week

Anthony cleared the waivers on Aug. , and has since become a free agent, though, his unemployed status will be ending very soon with Houston all set to sign the former Syracuse Orange star to a veteran’s minimum deal. That’s a bargain for a player of Anthony’s profile, but it’s hard to take pity on him, considering that the Hawks bought out the remaining $25.5 million on the final year of the deal he signed with the New York Knicks back in 2014.
