Dennis Schröder gives 2-word update on his return

Dennis Schroder-Anthony Davis-LeBron James

Los Angeles Lakers point guard Dennis Schröder is ready to return.

That’s according to Schröder, who posted an Instagram on Thursday with the caption “I’m back.”

Schröder has missed the past seven games after being placed in the league’s health and safety protocols on May 2. His timeline of 10-14 days means the earliest he could return for the Lakers’ game at the Indiana Pacers on Saturday (a 10 a.m. PT tip, BTW). Based on his caption, that seems to be the plan.

Prior to the Lakers’ shaky and short-handed win over the Houston Rockets on banner night, head coach Frank Vogel expressed hope that Schröder could return in time for the Lakers’ final two games of the season.

“It’s still a possibility,” Vogel said. “It’s all I can really say. It’s still in the early stage that he can return and he can return on that date as of right now. That hasn’t been prolonged, so we’re hopeful he’s able to play in the Indiana [Pacers] game.”

L.A. will head south to face the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday evening in the regular-season finale.

Schröder has had two stints in the league’s health and safety protocols this season. The Lakers went 0-4 without him in February. His latest absence aligns with concurrent ailments to LeBron James and Alex Caruso, leaving the Lakers (40-30) without key ball-handlers as they scramble to avoid the play-in game. Anthony Davis missed Wednesday’s game with groin soreness. Their status remains uncertain for the weekend.

The cause for Schröder’s latest placement on the list has not been disclosed.

Fortunately, Talen Horton-Tucker has stepped up in borderline-spectacular fashion in consecutive wins over the New York Knicks and Rockets. Still, the Lakers will surely welcome back Schröder, one of their key two-way sparkplugs.

Overall, L.A. is 4-7 this season without Dennis the Menace.
