Daryl Morey was in trade talks with Grizzlies on Andre Iguodala during week of Russell Westbrook trade

Former Golden State Warriors wing and frequent Houston Rockets foe Andre Iguodala could have been a member of the Rockets, with general manager Daryl Morey speaking to the Memphis Grizzlies while negotiating with the Oklahoma City Thunder to land eight-time All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook.

After signing 23-year-old guard D’Angelo Russell in a sign-and-trade with the Brooklyn Nets, the Warriors had to accommodate the salary by shedding veterans Shaun Livingston and former Finals MVP Iguodala—two of the Bay Area franchise’s members of the three-time NBA champion Warriors in this decade.

“It didn’t seem that there would be a fit for both parties,” Morey said. “I told them ([team owner and son] Tilman and Patrick Fertitta) quite a bit that it wasn’t going to happen because that’s what I believed. I didn’t think the pieces lined up. That’s why a three-team deal made sense. And I thought other teams would be more involved than we were; teams that had more fits.”

(Morey would not specify other teams involved in trade talks he pursued or other discussions beyond with the Thunder on the deal that was completed. He was in talks throughout that week with the Grizzlies about a deal for Andre Iguodala, according to two individuals with knowledge of the Rockets’ thinking, but Morey would not confirm any other trade talks.)

Golden State completed a trade with Memphis to send Andre Iguodala and picks to the Tennessee team, thus offloading Iguodala’s contract. The former Warrior is set to make north of $17 million in 2019-20 but will be a free agent at the end of the season.

After a trade for Iguodala with the Grizzlies never materialized, Morey turned his attention towards completing the Westbrook trade.
