Daryl Morey says Rockets are ‘definitely a buyer’ at trade deadline

After a slow start to the season, the Houston Rockets have been on a tear of late, winning 11 of their last 12 games. This includes Thursday night’s overtime victory against the defending champs, the Golden State Warriors.

The Rockets’ early-season woes exposed several issues with the team that require immediate attention. General manager Daryl Morey is definitely aware of these concerns and has admitted that the Rockets will look to improve their squad before the trade deadline.

Morey recently spoke with Sam Amick of The Athletic and discussed how the team intends to be active in the trade market before it closes in early February:

“Yeah, we’re for now (in terms of their mentality). So what do they say — buyers vs. sellers? We’re definitely a buyer. …I think we’ve been trying to win the title for a while, and we had a couple years before we got James where we probably didn’t have as much of a chance to win, where we were probably a little more future focused.”

Morey went on to explain how the team intends to continue to build around superstar James Harden, as they look to do one better than last season’s Western Conference Finals defeat at the hands of the Warriors:

“But since James has been here we’ve been buyers at the deadline and hopefully something comes along that we think can help our chances to win the title,” he added. “We’ve had a few years where we don’t, so we don’t force it, but we’re going to be looking for something to hopefully upgrade the team.”

The Rockets definitely have a win-now mentality, and adding one or two crucial pieces before the deadline should help boost their squad as well as their chances of toppling the Dubs this season.
