Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey isn’t pushing the panic button just yet. In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, the 2018 Executive of the Year urged Rockets fans to be patient, while also pointing out some positives he has seen from their mediocre start to the 2019-20 season.
Morey cited how newly acquired superstar Russell Westbrook is able to give them a different dynamic with their transition game. He also believes that James Harden — who is shooting an abysmal 38.1 percent from the field and 25.3 percent from downtown on the season — will be able to get out of his shooting funk.
The 47-year old GM did admit that their defense needs a lot of work. Nevertheless, he still believes that the team can still improve and is very much capable of ramping it up on that end of the floor, as evidenced by their top-notch defense in their 65-win 2017-18 campaign.
The Rockets, currently at 4-3 on the season, are dead last in opposing field goal percentage (48.9 percent) and 3-point percentage (40.4 percent). They are also giving up 123.1 points per game, which is 28th in the entire Association.
To add to their defensive problems, Houston also has some issues offensively. While they are currently fourth in the league in putting up points on the board at 119.3 per game, they are just 25th in field goal percentage and 27th in 3-point percentage.
The Rockets also had a horrendous start last year before James Harden got loose and erupted with his historic 2018-19 campaign.
