Daryl Morey gives his prediction for Rockets in 2020

The NBA is still establishing competitive formats in the hopes of finishing the 2019-20 season.

These formats range from play-in tournaments and the eradication of conference brackets to a World Cup-style of group play.

But while those formats have yet to be established, Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey said his team’s goal is clear: winning a championship.

Morey answered questions on the team’s Facebook page on Thursday, saying “anything short” of winning a title would be “disappointing.” He also called James Harden and Russell Westbrook two of the best players without a ring.

The Rockets are one of the teams in limbo as the NBA decides how best to proceed with the season.

Houston is currently the sixth seed in the Western Conference. However, the Rockets are just one game back of the fourth seed, and 2.5 games back of the third seed. Of course, the Rockets only have themselves to blame for this predicament.

After winning their first five games after the All-Star break, the Rockets promptly dropped each of their next four contests. However, they are still one of the most talented–and intriguing–teams to watch should the league finalize a return-to-play plan.

The Rockets had been thriving with their small-ball style of basketball prior to the aforementioned losing streak, with Russell Westbrook routinely carving out driving lanes and scoring at the rim seemingly at will.

The uncertainty of the competitive formats might also benefit Houston. Is it possible they would avoid the Los Angeles Lakers or Denver Nuggets, two teams with elite bigs? This could negate rebounding concerns in the playoffs.

In any case, Morey feels it is “championship or bust” for this Rockets squad.
