Daryl Morey congratulates Gersson Rosas, but wishes ‘he would’ve gone East’

Gersson Rosas, Daryl Morey

Daryl Morey is thrilled for Gerson Rosas. Still, that hardly means the Houston Rockets general manager is happy to be competing against his former colleague for years to come now that he has his own team.

In a statement on Rosas becoming the Minnesota Timberwolves’ new president of basketball operations, Morey praised him as “way overqualified” for the jobs he had with the Rockets.

“Gersson has been an unbelievable person to work with,” Morey said, per ESPN. “He’s been way overqualified for his job for a while here. He’s more than earned his shot, although I wish he would’ve gone East. We’re going to have an extremely tough competitor in the West.

“Minnesota is going to find how forward-thinking, how hard-working and how talented he is at putting together a winning team.”

Rosas slowly worked his way up the Rockets organizational pecking order over the last 17 years, leaving as the team’s vice president of basketball operations. Long considered one of the most well-respected front office underlings in the league, Rosas interviewed with Minnesota earlier this week and met with owner Glen Taylor on Wednesday. He’d previously had a meeting with the New Orleans Pelicans about their basketball operations vacancy, but it was filled by former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin.

Minnesota has several pressing matters to attend to this offseason, including the status of interim coach Ryan Saunders, who took over on the sidelines after Tom Thibodeau was fired in early January. The team also must make decisions on the free agencies of Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson, as well potential extensions for Dario Saric and Tyus Jones.

Rosas, of Bogota, Columbia, becomes the NBA’s first latino chief decision-maker.
