Chris Paul thinks Spurs are in good hands with Dejounte Murray

Dejounte Murray, Chris Paul

Houston Rockets star Chris Paul knows what San Antonio Spurs point guard Dejounte Murray is capable of, and he firmly believes the future is bright for the Silver and Black with the 22-year-old running the floor.

The end of an era has come for the Spurs at the point guard position, with Tony Parker deciding to leave town this offseason in free agency to sign with the Charlotte Hornets. He has been the longtime starter at the point for the San Antonio franchise, but now the post belongs to Murray.

Heading into his third NBA season, Murray will have the reigns handed over him. He did start 48 games last season, but he no longer has Parker behind him to mentor him and handle a good amount of minutes.

Paul, however, believes Murray is capable of taking more ball-handling duties, and he shared his thoughts about the young Spurs forward in an interview with Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.

“When Jamal Crawford got married a few years ago, Dejounte might have still been in high school. The night before Jamal’s wedding we played a pickup game in Seattle. Dejounte was on my team. Really good, really good. So athletic. Plays with a lot of confidence. Now, too, playing in San Antonio Pop (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) gave him the keys to the ship. He’s really going to be good now.”

Those comments from one of the best point guards the NBA has ever seen should help Spurs fans relax. Even though Murray is extremely talented, there are still quite a few in San Antonio that does not think Murray can step up as much as the team needs him to.

Last season with the Spurs, Murray ended up averaging 8.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. He shot 44.3 percent from the field overall and knocked down just 26.5 percent of his three-point attempts.

There is no question that Murray has a lot of athleticism, but there are areas, such as his perimeter shooting and playmaking, that he must improve. If he can take those areas of his game to a new level, the Spurs are going to be very happy with their new full-time starting point guard.
