Chris Paul and the Houston Rockets found themselves trailing by 14 points in the second quarter of Friday night’s match-up against the Brooklyn Nets. Instead of throwing in the towel early, Paul called for a players only timeout, which led to a turning point in the game.
Paul led the Rockets in scoring on Friday night. In his 37 minutes of playing time, the nine-time All-Star racked up 32 points on 13-of-27 shooting from the field (5-of-12 from beyond the arc, 1-of-1 from the free-throw line), 11 assists, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
During his post-game media availability, Paul was asked to comment on the player only timeout that took place in the second quarter.
“We’ve been playing a lot of games now, and the coaches try to do schemes,” Chris Paul told ESPN. “We just said, ‘Y’all stay out a second. Let us talk.’ I mean, at some point enough is enough. We talked about it as a team. ‘What are we going to do?’ They were just scoring every time down.”
The players only timeout seemed to motivate the Rockets players. Following that huddle, Houston held Brooklyn to 36 percent shooting for the remainder of the game, resulting in a 119-111 victory. With the win, Houston snapped a four-game losing streak.
“We was talking. We was yelling, cursing,” Carmelo Anthony said of the players only timeout. “It was something that we had to figure out, and we did that.”
The Rockets will be back in action on Saturday night, when they’ll travel to Chicago for a match-up against the Bulls. Tip-off inside the United Center is set for 8:00 p.m. EST.
