Chris Paul on WCF — ‘Who plays for just that?’

Chris Paul

Chris Paul wasn’t satisfied with just delivering his best playoff performance to date, putting up a game-high 41 points with 10 assists and seven rebounds in a 10-point win over the Utah Jazz in Game 5.

Matter of fact, this is the first time in Paul’s 13-year career in which he has managed to get past the second round of the playoffs — a narrative that has followed him for the longest time.

But he’s not ready to celebrate just yet, seeing much more in his immediate future.

“Not at all. Who plays just for that?” Paul told ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “Know what I’m saying? Not at all, not at all. We’ve got eight more wins to get. I don’t know what it’s supposed to feel like, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

The Houston Rockets have been in a collision course with the Golden State Warriors, one that will take place as soon as this upcoming Monday after most teams have managed to finish in five games or less.

Paul delivered in Game 5, doing just what the Rockets hoped he would do after seeing James Harden working on fumes last season against the San Antonio Spurs.

“Unbelievable. He went out there and took over the game,” said Harden, who scored 18 points on 7-of-22 shooting. “Especially for an opportunity like he’s never had before, he went to go get it. He put us all on his back and said, ‘Listen, I got us.’ That’s big time right there. That’s a big-time performance. He got in his bag and he called everybody off. He said, ‘You get out the way, I’m going to put us on my back.’ He had that look in his eye.”

Paul’s mid-range was automatic as usual, but it was a career-high 8-of-10 from deep that jumpstarted his individual run, carving the Jazz’s defense bucket after bucket in the fourth quarter.
