For Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul, his team shouldn’t pay attention to the win-loss record but rather to how they’re playing as a team.
The Rockets picked up their sixth win in a row in a 107-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors. They now have a 39-25 record, tying the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Portland Trail Blazers for third place in the Western Conference.
Paul, however, believes that the focus of the team should be pointed towards how they’re playing and keeping the momentum instead of their record.
“We can’t pay attention to it. We have to stay focused on how we’re playing,” the veteran guard said, per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.
“We’ve been saying that ever since … we were 11-14 and we were the Bad News Bears, everybody was talking about. For us, it’s about how we’re playing.”
It’s an interesting tactic by Paul. It implies that he has supreme confidence in his team’s identity and Mike D’Antoni’s system. After all, the Rockets’ unique offensive playing style — which consists solely of 3-pointers and lay-ups — has been a favorite target among analysts.
This playstyle brought them straight to the Western Conference Finals last year. But in Game 7 — the most important game of their lives — the Rockets missed almost every shot they hoisted up. It didn’t help that they missed the services of Paul who went down with an injury.
Now, with the playoffs just a few months away, Houston is looking better than before. They still employ a very similar offensive system, but they look hungrier than ever. Can this momentum send them to the NBA Finals?
