Chris Broussard is not a fan of the Russell Westbrook trade for Rockets

Russell Westbrook, Rockets, Chris Broussard

One of the craziest offseasons in NBA history got even wilder Thursday when Russell Westbrook was traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Chris Paul and future first-round picks.

Immediately, pundits began breaking down the trade and questioning the effect on the Rockets. Some said it would work and Westbrook would jell with former teammate James Harden. Some were vehemently opposed, claiming that one ball wouldn’t be enough for the two ball-dominant players.

Count FS1 analyst Chris Broussard as a member of the latter group. He went on “Undisputed” to lay out the reasons the trade would backfire on Houston:

Broussard is right that the trade will decrease the Rockets’ 3-point shooting. Chris Paul is a career 37 percent 3-point shooter who shot 36 percent from range last year. Westbrook is a career 30 percent 3-point shooter who shot a horrendous 29 percent from downtown in his last campaign. Houston is replacing a very reliable shooter with one who is notoriously poor.

However, the Rockets do get much faster and athletic. Westbrook is arguably the best guard in the league at creating and leading the fast break, and he should help Houston’s shooters get good looks.

The Rockets’ future success is in the hands of their two superstars. We’ll see if Broussard is correct in his assessment or if Russell Westbrook can prove him wrong.
