Carmelo Anthony’s $8 million trade bonus could prevent move to Rockets

Carmelo Anthony

For months now, New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony has been in the center of trade rumors, linking him to multiple teams. The latest one was a potential deal that would send him to the Houston Rockets, but so far, nothing has materialized.

Although there is mutual interest between both parties, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported, via the Rich Eisen Show, that there’s currently no traction for it, as Anthony has an $8 million trade bonus on his contract, making it more difficult for a deal to come to fruition. Windhorst also added that even if he waives the bonus completely, the Rockets do not have assets to give up in exchange for his services, making it more likely that the proposed deal ends up in a stalemate.

Despite the Knicks and Phil Jackson parting ways late last month, there is still a growing belief that Anthony will not be with the team anymore starting next season. He was reportedly open to waiving the no-trade clause in his current contract if he can be moved to the Rockets or the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He may be 33-years old now, but Anthony is showing no signs of slowing down significantly anytime soon and is still widely considered one of the elite players in the NBA today. Should he ultimately be traded to the Rockets, his addition will definitely increase their chances of winning it all next year. However, until that happens, the Houston faithful can only hope that things fall into place.
