Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul discuss players-only meeting

The Houston Rockets notched a much-needed victory on Friday night against the Brooklyn Nets. The James Harden-less Rockets got their second win in seven games to start the new campaign following the 119-111 victory in Brooklyn.

One pivotal moment in the ballgame was when veteran point guard Chris Paul asked the team coaches to step aside during a timeout in the second quarter so that the team could hold an impromptu players-only meeting/huddle in the middle of game.

According to Rockets newcomer Carmelo Anthony, tempers were flaring in the moment.

“We was talking, we was yelling, cursing,” Anthony said, via Ian Begley of ESPN. “It was something that we had to figure out and we did that.”

As it turns out, the heated discussion bore fruit as the Rockets were able to cut the 14-point deficit to just five points come halftime.

Paul shed some light on why he decided to instigate the players-only timeout, and what he hoped to achieve from the same.

“[Coaches] can tell us all the schemes they want to,” he said. “It’s up to us to figure out how we’re going to get a stop.”

Paul has been in hot waters recently following his on-court tussle with Los Angeles Lakers guard Rajon Rondo a couple of weeks back. His character was put to question as a number of damaging stories emerged in the aftermath of the violent altercation.

Nonetheless, Paul proved here how valuable his leadership is to the Rockets, as he pretty much sparked the team’s comeback on Friday night. It’s going to be a long road ahead for the struggling Rockets, and they will certainly need every bit of Chris Paul if they truly hope to challenge the Warriors and put an end to the champs’ three-peat fantasy.
