Bulls-Rockets Carmelo Anthony trade will need amendment due to discrepancy involving rights to international player

The trade call between the Houston Rockets, the Chicago Bulls, and the league office will have to wait, as the deal “might have to be amended over a discrepancy involving the rights to an international player,” according to Marc Stein of The New York Times.

It was due to this very reason that the league refused to process the trade on Monday, as the office was closed in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The NBA has exceptions for holidays like MLK Day, requiring the teams to submit information about the potential trade in place with advanced notice, so that a few select employees can process the information and prove or deny the transaction.

Had the trade gone through on Monday, the Rockets might not have needed to terminate James Nunnally’s contract to make room for Kenneth Faried, whom the Rockets were hellbent on playing Monday against the Philadelphia 76ers.

“I don’t think it’s right,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said of having to terminate Nunnally. “There’s ways (the league) could have facilitated it.”

Assuming the trade gets done, the Bulls will not play Carmelo Anthony during his tenure with the team, rather choosing to shop him before the trade deadline in hopes to unload more salary or acquire more assets.
