Breaking down Russell Westbrook’s total NBA salary from his career

Russell Westbrook, Thunder, Rockets

Russell Westbrook is an MVP on and off the floor. With that said, it is not surprising that his NBA career earnings will be at $338,048,478 once his current contract with the Houston Rockets expires, per Spotrac.

The Seattle SuperSonics drafted Westbrook out of UCLA with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft. The California guard signed a standard four-year rookie contract with Seattle — who became the Oklahoma City Thunder the same year.

Westbrook averaged 15.3 points and 5.3 assists as a rookie, making $3,493,680 that year. In his second season in the NBA, Russell made $3,755,640. He finished his rookie contract by making $4,017,720 in Year 3 and $4,090,724 in Year 4.

Russell signed a five-year, $78.6 million maximum rookie-scale extension with Oklahoma City. He made $13,668,750 in the first year of the deal, which was during the 2012-13 campaign. He then played in just 46 games during the 2013-14 season because of a knee injury, averaging 21.8 points and 6.9 assists while making $14,693,906.

In 2014-15, Westbrook averaged 28.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.6 assists while making $15,719,062. The 2015-16 season was the last year Kevin Durant played with Westbrook in OKC, and Russ made $16,744,218 that season while putting up 23.5 markers, 7.8 boards and 10.4 dimes.

Westbrook ended up staying loyal to the Thunder even after Durant joined the Golden State Warriors. He signed a three-year, $86 million contract with OKC before the start of the 2016-17 camapign. He then averaged a triple-double and won the MVP award in 2016-17, cementing himself as one of the greatest players in NBA and franchise history.

Westbrook made $26,540,100 during his MVP season.

In 2017-18, Westbrook made $28,530,608 and averaged a triple-double again. The 2018-19 campaign was Westbrook’s final season with the Thunder, during which he earned $35,654,150 while completing a rare triple-double average for the third straight year.

OKC traded Westbrook to the Rockets in the summer of 2019, ending a brilliant run for one of the most popular and beloved player in franchise history.

Before the 2019-20 season was suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis, Russell Westbrook was scheduled to make $38,506,482. The former MVP was averaging 27.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists in his first season with James Harden and the Rockets.

Westbrook is set to make $41,358,814 in 2020-21 and $44,211,146 in 2021-22. He has a player option worth $47,063,478 for the 2022-23 campaign.
