BREAKING: DeMarcus Cousins and Rockets are headed for a breakup

DeMarcus Cousins, Christian Wood, Rockets

The Houston Rockets and veteran center DeMarcus Cousins are heading towards a divorce, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Cousins, 30, recently had his partially guaranteed contract for 2020-21 season fully guaranteed by the Rockets before the Feb. 27 deadline.

However, Cousins, in his first year with Houston, is playing behind breakout big man Christian Wood, who Charania cites as the cornerstone piece for the Rockets in the frontcourt, leaving Cousins on the outside looking in.

Cousins previously spent six and half seasons with the Sacramento Kings, earning three All-Star selections, before joining the New Orleans Pelicans via trade and signing with the Golden State Warriors in 2018. Injuries derailed his time in the Bay Area along with a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019-20, before he emerged healthy and productive with the Rockets this season.

Cousins has averaged 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game in 2020-21, making 11 starts with Wood injured.

The former Kentucky standout was reunited with ex-college teammate John Wall with the Rockets after Houston acquired the former No. 1 pick from the Washington Wizards in a swap for Russell Westbrook. Wall has been reinvigorated with the Rockets, averaging 20.4 points and 6.3 assists per game one year removed from missing an entire NBA season.
