Things have begun to heat up over the last few days centered around All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony finally being on the move from the New York Knicks.
The latest chatter surrounding Anthony involves him possibly being traded to the Houston Rockets. According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the New Orleans Pelicans have now entered the picture as a third team to help facilitate a trade.
The Pelicans, once the home of Ryan Anderson, expressed interest in being one of the clubs involved, according to a source. Anderson’s contract, which has three years and $60 million remaining, needs to be part of the transaction because Anthony’s $27 million pact — plus trade kicker — is so immense. The Knicks have no interest in Anderson because he plays Kristaps Porzingis’ position and is older than the mid-20s-type player the club seeks.
The Pelicans’ inclusion in the trade talks is quite intriguing given that they would likely have to take back veteran forward Ryan Anderson in any scenario to help free up salary-cap space for the Rockets to acquire Anthony.
Anderson currently is set to enter the second year of his $80 million deal that has about $61 million remaining over the next three seasons. This move would further crowd their frontcourt that already features two All-Star big men in Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins.
That said, it may just be a matter of time before a deal gets works out that finally sees the Knicks move on from Anthony.
